Abstract

Composite materials are the most advanced and adaptable engineering material. Such materials often result in light weight structures having high stiffness and tailored properties for specific applications thereby saving weight and reduced energy needs. Glass fibre is the dominant fibre and is used 95 % of cases to reinforce thermoplastic and thermoset composites. There is a growing interest in composites reinforced with natural fibres because of their light weight, high specific strength re-newability and bio-degradability. These are now finding extensive uses in packaging, furniture and building and automotive industries. The main criterion for justifying the natural fibre thermoset in various fields of applications is their cost-effectiveness. Thermoset bio-composites have a potential future, yet their acceptability to a large scale has remained limited due to several reasons.
