Contemporary Problems of Women in India
Jump To References Section
Abstract
The author refreshingly writes on the socio-economic development in India away from the currently fashionable feminist formula. It is an empirical study after 15 years of hard fieldwork done under the able guidance of Bela Duttagupta, the eminent sociologist of Calcutta University. She diligently addresses vital women's issues like human rights, social justice, gender mainstreaming, poverty alleviation and sustainable development. The author rightly says in her preface that equality of women with men is not the real issue with Indian women. The real issues are basically developmental. Even today Indian women hardly have any access to basic facilities for improving their quality of life.
