Abstract

In the fight against climate change, India had to face two crushing defeats in the form of environment disasters, the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayas, in 2013 in Kedarnath and in 2023 in Sikkim. In the last 4 decades, the focus regarding global warming was on Ozone hole and polar ice caps which as per forecast, would melt, and cause sea levels to rise worldwide. No one had predicted the GLOFs disasters due to climate change. The above events call for monitoring and risk assessment of pro-glacial lakes in the Himalayan region to prevent any more disasters.
