Social Media: An Emerging Trend in Libraries

Abstract

The advancement of information technology has brought a lot of changes in the services of library. Compared to the traditional environment of library in present scenario social media is playing vital role in collection and dissemination of information in libraries. Just a decade ago social media was completely new concept to the librarians and it was seen by many having little relevance for use. In recent years there has been tremendous change in the attitude of both librarians and library users regarding use of social media. Social media is now widely used by librarians to fulfill a variety of objectives. Now social media has become effective medium in libraries of digital age. This paper will attempt to examine impact of social media on libraries. It will also focus on need of social media in libraries, its future and role of librarians in improving digital library services with the help of social media.
