Abstract

There has been acute shortage of oils and fats in the country for the past two decades. A wide gap in demand and availability of indigenously produced edible oils is continuously increasing. The current yearly requirement of edible oils is about 52 lakh tonnes but their total availability has been 31.5 lakh tonnes only durirg the year 1987-1988, thus showing a net shortage of 20.5 lakh tonnes.
