Abstract

The Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS), a major food safety net program in India, aims at alleviating food and nutrition insecurity among the undernourished population through supply of grains at subsidised rates by Filling up the Nutrition Gap (FNG). The TPDS, being the major food safety net program, is pivotal in implementation of National Food Security Act that makes right to food a legal entitlement. TPDS has undergone several reforms, the latest being the digitalisation of the system. Digitalisation was adopted by 29 states to plug the gaps and improve the impact of TPDS. The present study was undertaken to assess the functioning of the modified TPDS and Food and Nutrition Security in Urban Population of Vadodara, Gujarat, India. The major findings from the study indicate that the presence of Fair Price Shops and their regular functioning ensured food availability however, misclassification of the target households thwarted the accessibility to food grains at subsidised rates to the deserving households. TPDS was instrumental in promoting food and nutrition security in the households utilising the services.
