Abstract

Coronary heart disease has become one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the Indian subcontinent. Cardiovascular disease claims five to six million lives every year which accounts for over 64 per cent of all deaths reported in India. Diet is the most important factor that is used to treat people who have elevated blood lipids. Reduction in dietary saturated fats by seven per cent of energy reduces serum cholesterol by 10 per cent and mortality from ischemic heart disease by 25 to 30 per cent.
