Abstract
The Conference Generale des Poids et Mesures (CGPM) (General Conference on Weights and Measures), was constituted at the "Convention of Metre" held in Paris in 1875 on the use of metre as the unit of length. The CGPM was given the task of controlling the evolution of the metric system and its practical application at the international level. Since its inception, the CGPM has steadily refined and extended the metric system which now goes far beyond the original standards of dimensions and mass.
