With the declared target of the Indian government to become a USD 5 T rillion economy by 2024, the role that the Welding Industry ought to play in the growth of the Indian Economy has been discussed. Manufacturing industry while identified as a key contributor to the economy contributes only 16% to the economy against the 25% target laid by the National manufacturing policy . Welding as an enabling technology for manufacturing can play a significant role towards achieving the desired growth target. Developments in the last 50 years in welding technology and industries where welding technology plays a key role are delineated. T echnical competence in welding industry is reviewed and recommendations to overcome the challenges to Indian welding industry are spelt out.Downloads
