Abstract

All along the coastal region of India, fisher women are involved in fish related activities including fish selling, processing and marketing fish and net weaving. Women in fishing community as any other traditional community are more than doubly occupied with household as well as fish works. The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional status of the fisher women in the Puducherry region which is the biggest hub for the fishing community. The results of the study revealed inadequate intake of foods by the fisher women which is expressed as hidden hunger in the fisher women. The protein calorie inadequacy and the chronic energy deficiency data intensely highlights the requirement of awareness programs for the fisher women on importance of balanced diet and good nutrition practices to improve the nutritional status of the fisher women.
