Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by absolute or relative impairment of insulin secretion or significantly reduced tissue responsiveness to insulin. Diabetics hove chronic hyperglycaemia with disturbance in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Diabetes affected about 135 million people in 1995 and the incidence is expected to rise to 300 million in the year 2025 in the world. India ranks first in the diabetic population in the world, in Tamil Nadu, the urban prevalence has been reported as 14 to 16 per cent and rural prevalence as 10 to 12 per cent.Downloads
