Abstract

This is the ripe time for us in this country to build on our success in agricultural production and plan for the future. One of the first tasks is to protect the achievements of the last 25 years, the gains of the first Green Revolution. Not only do these gains mean that hundreds of millions of people have food to eat, but also the declining rural food prices that have accompanied productivity of the bread baskets and rice bowls cannot be taken for granted. For sustainable development, the first green revolution must be made more sustainable and at the same time we need to bring in o second revolution to combat the special problems in areas such as natural vagaries of climate, resource management and the infrastructural developments to prevent post harvest losses.
